The European Commission-United Nations Joint Initiative on Migration and Development (JMDI) is a new, €15 million 3-year programme which is funded by the EC and implemented by UNDP and its partner agencies UNHCR, the ILO, IOM and UNFPA. The JMDI will fund concrete migration and development projects in migrant sending, transit and host countries and aims to foster exchanges between practitioners with a view to identifying what actually works at the local and international level.

A Call for Proposals will be launched in December to distribute approximately €10 million to local authorities, NGOs and grassroots organisations which work in – or in partnership with organisations working in - 16 target countries (Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Georgia, Moldova, Ecuador, Jamaica, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Cape Verde, Mali, Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria and Ethiopia).

Discussions and information-sharing will take place at two ‘Knowledge Fairs’ in Brussels and online through the new ‘Migration and Development Knowledge Portal’, where a ‘Community of Practice’ will meet to discuss issues falling under the four thematic areas of the Joint Initiative (Remittances, Migrant Communities, Migrant Capacities and Migrants’ Rights)
