The Technical Skills
Africa 2008
conference
8 – 10 December 2008, Johannesburg, South
Africa
Quality technical training is recognised to be key to
enhancing economic competitiveness and contributing to social
inclusion, decent employment, and income and poverty reduction. An
insufficient supply of technical skills can also create a bottleneck
to private sector development and economic growth.
The
Technical Skills Africa
2008 conference will assist stakeholders in the
power, mining, ICT, and infrastructure sectors to identify where
their skills management strategies can be enhanced. The conference
will provide thorough analysis of skills acquisition, development,
maintenance and retention, and investigate how public-private
partnerships can help to address the current shortfall in skills
supply.
The
African continent has averaged 5 percent economic growth over the
past five years. While growth is occurring, it is being driven by a
handful of economic centres and by small concentrations of skilled
workers. The growth that the continent has been experiencing has
increased the demand for skills, and this demand is outstripping
supply of Africa’s most precious resource - its
people.
Last year, the South Africa market needed 300 000 artisans.
Only 7 000 graduated from training schools. In addition, the skills
pool has become global. Skilled workers migrate to the highest
bidder, and African countries and companies must ensure that they do
not fall victim to brain drain, whilst simultaneously taking
advantage of the mobility of skilled workers who possess
international experience.
Skills and talent management is vital to manage the current
skills gap. Companies must know how to align their competitive
strategies with their investments in people, and to ensure that
their investments provide maximum
value.
The Technical Skills Africa 2008
conference will provide practical solutions to African skills
development by drawing together expert speakers, policy makers, and
attendees from across the continent and
beyond.
