Mrs. FOLA LAOYE

(D.O.B. 27/5/70) –  Mrs. Laoye holds a Bachelors Degree in Accounting from the University of Lagos, Nigeria and a Masters of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, Cambridge, USA. She is also an Associate Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. Fola has had fifteen years of business experience, both locally and internationally, having trained with Ernst & Young, Lagos and Price WaterHouse Coopers in London. She is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Hygeia Nigeria Limited, promoters of Hygeia HMO, the foremost health maintenance organization in Nigeria and the Lagoon Hospitals group. While with Hygeia, she has been responsible for the start up and growth of the HMO business and the roll-out of two ultra-modern medical facilities in Lagos. She also lectures part-time at the Lagos Business School (Pan-African University) in the area of Strategy and Business Policy.

Hygeia Nigeria Limited was incorporated in 1984 as a limited liability company.  The Company was promoted by Prof. E. A. Elebute and Prof. (Mrs.) O. W. Elebute, a husband-and-wife team of physicians who, had several years medical experience, having been among the foundation staff team of the Lagos university Teaching Hospital in Lagos at its inception in 1962.  At inception, Hygeia successfully raised capital from 22 shareholders including African Alliance Insurance Company Limited, UNIC Insurance Plc, and Lion of Africa Insurance Plc. 

In the past five years, Hygeia Nigeria Limited has made the transition from being an investment in a hospital to a full-fledged healthcare company, having accomplished the development of its Integrated Healthcare Delivery model on the following various tracks:-

HMO: Hygeia is one of the leading and most respected HMO operators in Nigeria, a country with the unique combination of having one of the largest healthcare markets in Africa with an estimated population of 128 million.  Hygeia has generated a cumulative revenue of approximately N2.5 billion over the last 5 years, whilst its enrollment base for the HMO plan has grown to over 150,000 members from some of the well recognized blue chip companies in Nigeria and from the Federal Government’s National Health Insurance Scheme.

Lagoon Hospitals: Established Lagoon Hospital Apapa (40 bed tertiary care facility) in December 1986, Lagoon Hospital Ikeja (10 bed secondary care facility) in January 2001 and Lagoon Clinic Victoria Island (Out patient Ambulatory care) in October 2002.

Lagoon Hospitals has a Technical Service Agreement partnership with Apollo Hospitals India for the improvement of its Healthcare Operations, Training of Medical Specialists and Management Staff, and upgrade of its Equipment and Premises.  Apollo Hospitals Group is India’s most trusted healthcare company, with over 35 hospitals and 6,400 beds under management. Apollo’s mandate with Lagoon Hospitals will also include Telemedicine support in Orthopaedics, Cardiology etc., exchange programmes for training manpower. The Apollo relationship is strategic to the future of Hygeia, and will contribute immensely to the enhancement of service delivery from its nationwide network of member hospitals.
