DR. KATE ADAMS

Dr Kate Adams is a GP in Hackney, East London and is deputy chair of the British Medical Association’s International Committee. Since 2003 has been a non executive director of the British Medical Journal Publishing Group.

The BMA is an organisation representing the interests of over 120,000 doctors in the UK. In addition to representing members’ professional interests, the BMA has departments in ethics, international affairs, science and education.
Dr Adams medico-political interests include health and human rights, asylum seekers’ health, patient safety, skills drain and supporting refugee and overseas doctors.
The scale of migration of health care professionals from developing countries to developed countries has dramatically increased in recent years and is a major factor contributing to the collapse of health systems. The BMA is actively engaged in highlighting the skills drain issue and seeking solutions.

The BMA has many health professionals as members from developing countries, who wish to support health services in their home country. The BMA is beginning to work with Diaspora groups and is looking at how, in its role as a national medical association, it is most able to engage and support the contribution of the health Diaspora in supporting health systems in developing countries.
