Dr MANDELA THYOKA MB BS, MRCS Ed, Specialist Registrar in General Surgery

Currently working at the department of Paediatric Surgery, Royal Aberdeen Childrens Hospital. Basic Medical training at St Andrews University in Scotland 1990-1992, Clinical years at University of London and completed and graduated from University of Malawi in 1996. Spent initial part of my work in a district hospital set up in Zomba, Malawi before joining private practice at Blantyre Adventist Hospital in 1998. Took time off mainstream surgical training to be a lead clinical fellow into a large randomised clinical trial into the management of septic arthritis in children in Malawi. This trial compared aspiration and open washout treatment of septic arthritis. Published work in peer-reviewed journals. Basic Surgical training from 2001 to 2003 and attained membership of College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) in 2003 and membership of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2004. Higher surgical training as a Specialist Registrar in General Surgery first at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary from 2004. Main interest areas outside surgical practice have been advocacy (member of Malawi Health Equity Network, MHEN), sports medicine (team doctor for the Malawi national football team 1996-1998) and ex-board member of Medical Council of Malawi. Married to a Malawian wife, Dr Tumpale Mhango.
