DR. NEIL SQUIRES (MBChB, MPH, MFPHM, DTM&H)
Dr. Neil Squires (MBChB, MPH, MFPHM, DTM&H) is a Senior Health and Population Adviser working within the Human and Social Development Unit of DG Development of the European Commission. Neil led the development of the EU Strategy for Action on the Crisis in Human Resources for Health in Developing Countries, which was adopted by the Commission on 12th December 2005 and is leading an EU Member State working group to define a set of actions that Europe can support to strengthen the international response to the human resource crisis. Neil is a member of the Transitional Working Group on Human Resources, formed during the High Level Forum on the Health Millennium Development Goals, and is helping to define the strategic plan for the Global Alliance for Human Resources for Health, formed following consensus at the Paris High Level Forum in November 2005. Dr. Squires is a public health doctor, formally an NHS consultant in Public Health in the North West of England, and has been a District Health Officer in Malawi, Africa, a Senior Adviser for the Department for International Development, covering, West and North Africa, the Great Lakes and Horn, and the Africa Policy Units of DFID and more recently was a Senior Human Development adviser working for DFID in Bangladesh. He has also worked at SHO level within the NHS, and worked on Leprosy control in India.
